“Damn, girl, you look good.”
The white shirt had been one of the good pieces sitting in Mary’s closet, collecting dust because it would not button. At 43, she tried it again. This time it closed.
But the most revealing part was not the shirt. It was Mary seeing herself: “I am in amazement. Look at me.” Then came a literal pat on the back—a small gesture that held the meaning of the whole chapter.
